You love to hike and enjoy nature’s beauty but it’s starting to get a little boring. What can you do to jazz up your routine? Maybe you’re starting to hear that mountain peak calling your name.

Before you start dreaming about making it to the top, you’ll need to get some more equipment than just those good old walking shoes, cap and your water bottle. Mountain hiking can be extreme but what a rush of adrenaline it gives you when you’re standing at the top. The view’s pretty nice, too!

Here’s a list of some gear you’ll need. It’s not as extensive as actual mountain climbing, but it’s necessary to plan ahead because you’ll be in some remote areas where help can take a while to get to you.

Clothing

Use the layering system like you’d use in regular hiking but with a few differences. Your base layer is responsible for keeping you dry and comfortable. For mountain hiking, wear two pairs of long johns, top and bottoms. Get ones made from synthetics, not cotton.

Your second layer provides you with insulation and warmth. Remember it gets colder the higher up you go. Your last layer is the shell layer. It’s job is to repel water and wind to keep you dry and warm. Mountains can be quite windy and have snow even in the summer months.

Shirts for mountain hiking during good weather:

  • Wool or fleece sweater or synthetic insulated jacket
  • Wool shirt or sweater, second fleece/pile jacket, vest, etc.

Fleece pants with side zips are nice and they come in handy if you’re getting too hot.

For mountain hiking, an additional 4th layer of clothing is usually added called the ’super’ insulation layer. In extremely cold conditions, you need to add a large amount of insulation to keep your body’s thermal equilibrium. Some examples of super insulation clothes you can wear are “expedition” down parka with a good hood and wind tunnel and down pants or “expedition” pile pants.

Eye Protection

Eye protection is critical when you’re hiking in mountain glaciers whether in Alaska or the Himalayans. Extreme glare commonly causes snow blindness even on overcast days. Mountain hiking sunglasses need to provide protection from ultraviolet and infrared rays. Get wrap-around ones to protect your eyes from side glare.

I came to running a bit later than many people. When I turned 45, I realized that I was at close to my fifties as I was to my 30’s. That was a turning point for me.

I could hang up my youthful past and embrace my graying years. It’s only natural to think you’ve got to slow down, take it easy and that you’re just going to get stiff and achy.  I was always athletic and just couldn’t see myself sitting in a rocker anytime soon. So I decided to take up jogging.

This was a new sport for me and it took me a while to adapt especially since I have a ‘funny’ knee. I started off the first few weeks by walking  - fast - for 40 minutes. No strolling allowed. Then I added in some jogging for 5 minutes at a time to replace some walking. At first, I was totally out of breath with my really slow pace. It was almost embarrassing. But I kept at it.

After about 4 months of doing this 4 times a week, I could jog for 30 minutes straight with an 8 minute walk in the beginning to warm up and a 7 minute walk at the end to cool down. Long about then, I decided I wanted to enter the next 5k run in my hometown. Let me tell you, that was so much fun and the accomplishment of being able to do it took 10 years off me.

Now at 55, I still lope along and enter the races a few times a year. I’m not interested in winning, but I like the social aspect of it. My heart rate is significantly better than it was at 55 and my cholesterol is down. I feel energetic and rarely take naps like my ‘old’ friends do.

Try something new and take up a sport at any age. It will only make you younger in body and mind.

Pilates has been around for a century now. It’s a system of strengthening your muscles with special focus on your core - abdominals and back. It first became popular in the United States with the NYC ballet. The dancers quickly learned that they could avoid injuries and gain more strength by incorporating Pilates exercises into their routines.

In the 21st century, football players have ‘discovered’ the benefits by using Pilates for cross-training. We think of weight lifting and big, muscular guys when football comes to mind. Pilates conjures up images of long, lean muscles. How can it benefit a typical wide receiver?

Most notably for the flexibility it gives to them. They also tend to be surprised at just how hard their muscles work when they start Pilates routines. It’s designed to target, strengthen and equalize muscles that have been previously ignored. The players are now getting stronger, quicker and preventing injuries by using this method.

Golf is another sport where Pilates is a great way to improve your game. Full range of motion and flexibility especially in your back is going to help your swing improve dramatically.

Find a Pilates studio near you and get some individual attention. Watch your performance with your chosen sport soar!

Horse jumping is a sport that even non-riders love to watch. Seeing a thousand pound horse propel himself over an obstacle never gets old. Horses are natural athletes with unmatched beauty.

Before you begin jumping, make sure you’ve got the basics of horse riding down pat. You know both your leads well and can hold a two-point position out of your saddle without holding onto the reins or your horse’s neck for balance. Leg strength and correct positioning are critical while going over fences.

Start off with simple poles on the ground laid out in a grid. Use four poles and space them 3 feet apart for trotting and 5 to 6 feet for an easy canter. As you approach the poles, go into a two point position and rest your hands on your horse’s crest. You don’t have to put weight on them but get into the habit of moving your hands forward and down. This will keep you from hitting your horse in the mouth when you start jumping. But if you need to, grab some mane! Hold that position over all the poles in your grid then sit back into the saddle and regroup.

When you and your horse are comfortable with this, set up a small jump with 2 poles in an ‘X’ shape about 18″ high. Put four poles on the ground spaced 3′ apart and approach the jump at a trot. As you reach the ground poles, take your two point position and put your hands on your horse’s neck. He’ll give you a little hop over that ‘X’ and probably land in a canter. You slowly build from that foundation.

If you’ve got a yen to take up jumping - go for it. It’s exciting and fun. Start with baby steps while you’re learning and before you know it, you and your horse will be a well-oiled jumping team.

I was really happy to see that coverage for the Olympic Dressage was included this year. In the past, it was a practically unheard of sport. Its rise in popularity continues to grow as new converts arrive all the time.

Most of us will never compete at the Grand Prix levels - and that’s ok because that’s a lifestyle and expense out of range for the average horse owner. But basic dressage training is great for any horse and any type of riding style.

Dressage training will teach your horse to be supple and flexible. These are traits that are useful whether you’re jumping a course, showing in Western Pleasure or barrel racing. Your horse’s muscles will become more evenly worked when you teach him to suppleness. That ’stiff as a board’ feeling goes away - especially when turning to the right. Most horses are left-handed and when you turn to the right, they’ll pop their shoulder and fall into the turn. This makes them heavy and awkward - less able to develop their true athletic abilities.

Obedience and willingness are two more benefits of basic dressage training. I put them together because you can have obedience without willingness through harsh training methods and intimidation. A willing equine partner is always more pleasant and with consistent step-by-step dressage methods, you’ll have a happy horse who doesn’t look for the easy way out at every chance. No more ear pinning - no more tail wringing.

Competitive dressage is done in an arena that is 60 by 20 meters. That’s about 198 by 66 feet in American measurements. The rail is low to encourage your horse to travel straight on his own without help from a fence. There are markers placed at even intervals around the ring where you make transitions to different gaits, begin or end a circle and of course ‘X’ marks the spot in the exact middle where you begin and end. Here’s something funny all dressage riders can relate to: A Beginner’s Dressage Test.
