As fishing season gets underway and you prepare for your first outing, remember that a lot of the fun comes from getting your tackle box loaded up with the things you’ll need for the trip. Though it’s unlikely that you’re forget hooks, bobbers, leaders, line and sinkers, you could fail to pack everything you need, which could spell disaster for your otherwise fun and relaxing venture. Here’s a list of some of the items that are necessities for any angler’s tackle box.

Fishing Tackle Boxes - Needle Nose Pliers

Needle nose pliers are a great addition to any tackle box. Needle nose pliers make things simple when it comes to separating a fish from a hook. Be sure to choose a needle nose that has an integrated cutter that will be quite handy if you need to snip the end of a hook before removing it. Needle nose pliers are also terrific for crimping leaders and split shot on your line.

Knife

Pick a strong knife that can be used for many things. Choose an large, stainless steel blade. A partially serrated blade offers the most flexibility. Cleaning and preparing the fish is another reason why the blade must be sturdy. Two good features to have on a fishing knife are a hook remover and a scaler.

File

A file will help keep hooks sharp and, with a bit of practice, keep your knife sharp. Choose a small triangular shaped file with a different abrasive surface on each side. A number of fisherman like using a whetstone better, but these take more practice than a file.

Toilet Roll

Let’s be honest - when you need it, there’s no substitute. It’s not necessary to take a full roll. Unroll a generous amount and store it in a waterproof bag. But make sure to take enough—and while you’re add it, throw in some Kleenexes or paper towels. If a fire is needed on the trip, these items all burn quite well.

Fishing Tackle Boxes - Nail Clippers

This tool often comes with a built-in file that’s good for sharpening hooks. You may also use the clippers for cutting the line.

Lighter

You never know when you’re going to need a fire. You also can use the lighter to seal the ends of nylon rope to prevent fraying or to repair damaged plastic worms.

Fishing Tackle Boxes - Emergency Equipment

The best option is to buy a small, pocket sized kit. At the least, the kit must have antibiotic spray or ointment, and something to dress and clean the wound. An Ace® bandage and gauze pads are good items to add to the kit. Be sure to carry aspirin or another analgesic as well. Finally, don’t forget the sunscreen.

Insect Repellent

There’s nothing worse than being bothered by insects, so be sure to carry an effective brand of insect repellent that will work on the types of insects you expect to encounter.

Easily Portable Snacks

Pack a few energy bars or granola bars. They are nutritious, just as raisins or nuts are.

Once you’re set with all this gear, you can concentrate on landing that trophy specimen!
